Review: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Title: The Book Thief
Author: Markus Zusak
Published March 14th 2006 by Knopf Books for Young Readers
Goodreads | Amazon | The Book Depository
_______________________________________

I certainly liked this book, I liked it a lot, actually, but I didn’t love it.

The story is about Liesel, a German girl with communist parents that had to give her up to another family because (as we all know) the Nazis were off to kill them. So Liesel and her little brother are supposed to go to this family’s house but in the way there her brother dies in the cold train and is then buried in the middle of nowhere. Liesel is of course heartbroken and when one of the buriers drops his little handbook of burying people, Liesel steals it, it’s the last connection she will have to her brother.

Then Liesel arrives to her new house. Things are rough of course; Liesel keeps getting awful nightmares about her brother’s death. But her new papa is a good man and he helps her deal with it and plays his accordion for her and teaches her how to read.

Jeez, I love Papa Hans sooooooo much; he makes you see that not all Germans had lost their humanity during those difficult years. Papa Hans is one of those characters I will forever store in my mind for when I need to remember that there are good people everywhere. Mama Rosa is good too I guess, she was very mean sometimes but anyway everyone pales in comparison to Papa Hans.

And of course we have Liesel too, she’s kind of amazing but very fragile and sometimes clueless, but her good nature makes you love her instantly. She has a big heart, and it was that (and not her scrawny form) that captivated Rudy, the boy next door with his lemon-colored hair and his braveness and boldness, he’s dead honest and omg I have never wanted to hug/feed someone so much in my whole life. If there was a character that I came as close to love as Papa Hans it was Rudy and OMG I WON’T CRY IN PUBLIC… MUST. STOP. THINKING.

There, I’m feeling better; I’ll try to explain Max’s part now. Max is a Jew, son of one of Papa Hans’ friends from WWI. Papa promised that he would help his friend’s family with anything, whenever they needed him. The day to honor his promise comes when Max arrives to his door, starving and exhausted. Hiding a Jew, as we all know, was very very dangerous but papa Hans is a great person and soon he becomes another son to him, and a brother to Liesel. It was so achingly beautiful to see Liesel and Max’s friendship blossom, and then that book he…

Well, I’ll guess I’ll stop trying to tell you the story but don’t go yet! Hear me out: y’all need to read this book. Somehow confusing at the start and in some parts it was slow, but once you get grasp the fact that it’s told by death and that death is this nice colorful person Mexican culture always believed it was, then you’re off to have a great time.

It’s heartbreaking yes, and I will spoil you: ( remember to highlight ahead if you want the spoilers) it doesn’t have a happy ending, it’s unfair and I hate it, but it wor.ks.

Spies & Prejudice

Fields’ Rule #1: Don’t fall for the enemy.

Berry Fields is not looking for a boyfriend. She’s busy trailing cheaters and liars in her job as a private investigator, collecting evidence of the affairs she’s sure all men commit. And thanks to a pepper spray incident during an eighth grade game of spin the bottle, the guys at her school are not exactly lining up to date her, either.

So when arrogant—and gorgeous—Tanner Halston rolls into town and calls her “nothing amazing,” it’s no loss for Berry. She’ll forget him in no time. She’s more concerned with the questions surfacing about her mother’s death.

But why does Tanner seem to pop up everywhere in her investigation, always getting in her way? Is he trying to stop her from discovering the truth, or protecting her from an unknown threat? And why can’t Berry remember to hate him when he looks into her eyes?

With a playful nod to Jane Austen, Spies and Prejudice will captivate readers as love and espionage collide.

Hello, ghost readers and usual commentors, how are you guys doin'?

I'm sorry for my lack of posting these past weeks, I've been busy being the resident's slave saving lives and to top it off my wireless died yesterday ):

but as always, YA books make me happy and as I was scrolling down my booklist I remembered this book and OMG! I've forgotten how good it sounds! it's kind of a P&P retelling, but I don't care! it sounds too amazing to pass! lots of tension between our MCs and I really like the cover, the girl with the coat and the umbrella she looks like a serious spy cliché and I happen to love that!

Tanner Halston: Oh dude, I already like you because you sound like you're trouble and that is Serious Hotness.

Berry Fields: channeling my inner Tyra Banks: girl sounds...

!

She does! anyone who pepper sprays guys in the 8th grade during spin-bottle is my hero.

WoW is weekly meme created by Jill at Breaking The Spine in which bloggers can share books they're excited to get soon :)

LET THE SKY FALL
by shannon messenger
A broken past and a divided future can’t stop the electric connection of two teens in this “charged and romantic” (Becca Fitzpatrick), lush novel.

Seventeen-year-old Vane Weston has no idea how he survived the category five tornado that killed his parents. And he has no idea if the beautiful, dark-haired girl who’s swept through his dreams every night since the storm is real. But he hopes she is.

Seventeen-year-old Audra is a sylph, an air elemental. She walks on the wind, can translate its alluring songs, and can even coax it into a weapon with a simple string of commands. She’s also a guardian—Vane’s guardian—and has sworn an oath to protect Vane at all costs. Even if it means sacrificing her own life.

When a hasty mistake reveals their location to the enemy who murdered both of their families, Audra’s forced to help Vane remember who he is. He has a power to claim—the secret language of the West Wind, which only he can understand. But unlocking his heritage will also unlock the memory Audra needs him to forget. And their greatest danger is not the warriors coming to destroy them—but the forbidden romance that’s grown between them.

Review: A Charmed Life by Jenny B. Jones

Title: A Charmed Life
Author: Jenny B. Jones
Published May 1st 2012 by Thomas Nelson Publishers
______________________________________

What can I tell you about this series except that it is genius and that you shouldn’t miss it.

A charmed life is a compilation of three novels about Bella Kirkwood, a NYC kid who has to move to Oklahoma due to her mom’s recent new marriage to a tampon-factory-working man with 2 kids.

Bella is not thrilled, to say the least, but she is trying to make it work, even though her new patent leather shoes got ruined while walking through manure, and even though the chief of the school’s paper gave her a story about recycling (trash diving is so not her thing); oh and did I mention someone is always trying to kill her?

This is one of my favorite series ever. Full of wit and laugh-out-loud moments, Bella’s adventures will keep you entertained and satisfied. And the continuous mysteries that unravel in this small-town are another plus that will for sure give you a fun time.

I love pretty much all the characters, but Bella is my favorite of course, because she might love her fashion brands but she has a huge heart and a lot of courage. Her nosiness is comical but her braveness is real. She's the perfect main character because even though her life is much more interesting than yours you just have to love her because she is adorable, and I want to be her BFF.

Luke Sullivan. Oh Luke, can I marry you? He’s the most perfect guy I have ever read. So chivalrous and smart, and even though he likes Bella, he is not going to put up with her games. I love how dedicated he is, and certainly, I love his preppy style. Oh, and I can't forget, he looks like this -->

Now guys, if I tried to mention every character in the series I will be here all summer but  one character I really have to tell you about is Ruthie.
Ruthie is amazing. The funniest side-kick ever, she is snort-you-drink-out-your-nose funny, I do not recommend you read this book in public if you have one of those witchy/piggy/hey-look-at-me laughs because people will be looking at you weird.

In conclusion, there's only a couple series I can say that have managed to stay my favorites through all my life, A Charmed Life is one of them. No matter what age I am I always enjoy re-reading the adventures of Bella Kirkwood and now with this make-over you have the chance to own the 3 books in one for a great price and I asure you, it's money well-spent! ;)

Waiting On Wednesday: Nobody but Us

WoW is weekly meme created by Jill at Breaking The Spine in which bloggers can share books they're excited to get soon :)

Hello again.

Nobody but Us
by Kristin Hallbrook

Bonnie and Clyde meets Simone Elkeles in this addictively heart-wrenching story of two desperate teenagers on the run from their pasts.

They’re young. They’re in love. They’re on the run.

Zoe wants to save Will as much as Will wants to save Zoe. When Will turns eighteen, they decide to run away together. But they never expected their escape to be so fraught with danger....

When the whole world is after you, sometimes it seems like you can’t run fast enough.

Nobody But Us, told in alternating perspectives from Will and Zoe, is an unflinching novel, in turns heartbreaking and hopeful, about survival, choices, and love...and how having love doesn’t always mean that you get a happy ending. Described as “beautiful, heartbreaking, and exhilarating” by Kody Keplinger, author of The DUFF, Nobody But Us will prove irresistible to fans of Nina Lacour, Jenny Han, and Sara Zarr.

Young love and a road trip...

AWWW. WHERE DO I SIGN UP?!
You know me, I love me some contemporary romance and this book seems to be one of this year's most promising
so heck yes I'll be reading :D

Review: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Title: Throne of Glass
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Expected publication: August 7th 2012
by Bloomsbury USA Children's
Goodreads | Amazon | The Book Depo
____________________________________

You don’t know how hard it was for me to even pick up this book. I used to be a really big fan of fantasy but lately I found nothing but disappointment in the fantasy books I read. So it was really a leap of faith to start Throne of Glass. But people, I have not enjoyed a fantasy book so much since Graceling, and it is save to say that I enjoyed it even more. *gasp*

Throne of Glass starts with a bang, Celaena Sardothien is the greatest assassin the country of Adarlan has ever seen, but a year ago she was betrayed and captured. Therefore she was send to Endovier, an awful place where prisioners are sent to work in the salt mines and where the average life span is a month. Celaena has survived a whole year but it has destroyed both her spirit and her body.

The surprise of her lifetime comes when she’s summoned to see Prince Dorian, son of the tyrant king of Adarlan, and he offers her something she can’t refuse. She will compete against 22 of the most terrifying people in the kingdom for a chance to be the King’s champion, a title for basically be the king’s right hand and do his dirty work. Celaena is not a fan of the king but shall she win and after 4 years of service, she will be a free woman. Shall she lose, she will be sent back to Endovier.

Celeana knows she can win, and the opportunity is too good to pass. So off she is to the Glass Palace, handcuffed and chained to the quiet and enigmatic Chaol Westfall, Captain of the King’s army, and upon their arrival they’re both bound to train and prepare for the contest.

The contest is several months long, the 23 contestants, must undergo tests to see who is the strongest and better suited to be the king’s champion. Celaena sees no threat in most of them, except for Cain, a huge ex-soldier that is unnervingly good.

But the contest doesn’t go nearly as smoothly as any of them thought, contestants are showing up dead and half eaten and no one has an idea of why this might be happening. So Celaena has to watch her back 24/7.

People, this book is full of surprises, you’re in for a thrill ride. I didn’t expect it to be so entertaining, I guess most of that comes from the fact that it reads like a modern read, despite it is quite obvious they live like the middle ages, Celeana and Chaol and Prince Dorian, they’re all witty and amazing and it’s hard to not smile while you read them.

Celaena is a 17 year old, who has had a tough life, but despite of everything she still mantains a sassy and witty personality that make her instantly likable. Celaena is strong and practically invincible yet she’s approachable, and that’s what makes her so easy to like. I wish she was my champion haha.

Every other character was masterly developed to be its own self. For example, the love triangle, you know I hate love triangles but the two guys in this book are so different and interesting in their own way that I couldn’t be bothered who ends up with Celaena. Even though it’s clear Celaena has already made a choice. I want you to get to know them too:

  • Chaol Westfall: He is 22 years old and the Captain of the Guard, he got the position defeating countless men and every day he tries to prove he deserves it. He has a troubled past and is very enigmatic and reserved. At first he was the only one that didn’t trust Celaena and kept a close watch on her (it was also his job) but he still couldn’t bring himself to relax when he was with her. Nonetheless, Celaena instantly clicked with him and before either of them realize it, they became friends.

  • Prince Dorian: He is 19 years old, handsome and prince of a country that has conquered most of the world. His father is a jerk who is hungry for power, and Dorian, a reader instead of a soldier, doesn’t understand that. So naturally he wanted to rebel a little, that’s why he chose to bid for Celaena at the contest, to annoy his father. But soon he can’t help but notice Celaena’s beauty and brains.

I liked both guys, they were amazing in their own way, but I think you know who *I* would chose. Even though Dorian is funny and charming, and as the book progresses he becomes braver and braver; Chaol is the one with the hard work, his father is not the king so he is not in a safe position. Chaol is deadly with a sword, he’s kind and mysterious and he is the bravest guy, I loved how he supported Celaena and put himself in danger. I would say he is the Tim Riggins of this book.

The only thing I am going to complain about is how much the fact that Celaena is deadly and amazing with swords is mentioned, it ws like "okay I understand, she's the best ever, I got it", she is also 18 years old by the end of the book but she was kind of childish and immature, I excpected her to be a woman who knew her strenghts and took advantage of them (like Nehemia) but she kind of let me down, there wasn't much depth in her, but I might get her better if I had read the novellas though.
So yeah, you guys, I really very enjoyed this story. This book, despite of being fantasy, it's incredibly easy to read, I am usually all about contemporary but this fantasy book was unlike any other because it's read just like a contemporary except set in the past. It wasn't as complex as others and that made you focus in the characters instead of in understanding the setting and the time. I really encourage y’all to try it, even if you're just 12 years old or something. I am sure you will not regret it.

There were a lot of scenes I wanted to draw but it is just so hard to draw on paint, haha.
This is when Dorian first starts to realize the Chaol & Celaena's friendship is also blossoming.

SORRY, 4TH YEAR OF MED SCHOOL = CHAOTIC

The Collector by Victoria Scott

He makes good girls...bad.

Dante Walker is flippin’ awesome, and he knows it. His good looks, killer charm, and stellar confidence has made him one of hell’s best—a soul collector. His job is simple, weed through humanity and label those round rears with a big red good or bad stamp. Old Saint Nick gets the good guys, and he gets the fun ones. Bag-and-tag.

Sealing souls is nothing personal. Dante’s an equal opportunity collector and doesn’t want it any other way. But he’ll have to adjust, because Boss Man has given him a new assignment:

Collect Charlie Cooper’s soul within 10 days.

Dante doesn’t know why Boss Man wants Charlie, nor does he care. This assignment means only one thing to him, and that’s a permanent ticket out of hell. But after Dante meets the quirky, Nerd Alert chick he’s come to collect—he realizes this assignment will test his abilities as a collector, and uncover emotions deeply buried.
